Irrigated Areas and Multiple Cropping

The ratio of irrgated area to that of the net sown area has witnessed a rising trend. It increased from 18.7% in2001-02 to 19.11% in 2002-03. Similarly multiple crop irrigation has also been on the rise, attaining 30.4% in 2002-03.

Both irrigated as well as multiple crop irrigated areas have steadily enhanced annually, but have witnessed fluctuations in the percentages, due to a corresponding rise in the net sown area.

The total irrigated area, including multiple irrigation, in 2002-03 stood at 2.7 million hectares. Since areas suitable for irrigation in Myanmar, approximate to about 11 million hectares, it amounts to about only 25% Nevertheless the percentages of irrigated as well as multiple crop irrigated areas have shown a steady increase.
