Organization
of Ministry
|
The
role of irrigation can be reckoned as activities constituting
he systematic supply of water to cropping areas for agricultural
development, as and when necessary and draining out the surplus
water or protecting flood water from the cropping areas as
well. On a broader universal basis, irrigation remains as
a major element in contributing towards food self-sufficiency,
for an ever increasing population as well as the greening
of the environment.
Myanmar
is an agricultural country. It abounds in an abundance of
water resources. The Irrigation Department in harnessing
such resources, not only concentrates in providing increased
irrigation for the development of the agriculture sector,
but also embraces objectives pertaining to adequacy of drinking
water, protection of the environment and generation of hydro-electricity. |

Appropriate survey and
investigation remain essential to precede new construction
projects. At this stage it includes feasibility studies such
as topographic land surveys and as well hydrological and geological
investigation and analysis.
The Investigation Branch, headed by a Director and head-quartered
at Yangon is responsible for both topographical and soil survey
works, and two separate sub-branches under control of Assistant

obtained by using up-to-date distomats, total stations and
computer softwares.

of their activities, there exist (182) stations registering water
levels of streams and rivers, (71) rainfall stations and ( ) discharge
measuring stations, located at the virous completed, under construction
and proposed new project sites, for collection of data. The information
