Provision of sufficient irrigation water

At present, different modes of annual surface water use has not yet exceeded 10% of available water resources of 870 million acre feet per annum. The measures being under taken for irrigation development are:-
1. The construction of new reservoirs and dams,
2. The proper management for the storage and utilization of run-off water from the watershed areas,
3. The renovation of existing reservoirs for raising storage capacity and efficient delivery of irrigation water,
4. The diversion of water from streams and rivers, during high water levels into adjacent ponds or depressions for storage with sluice gates,
5. The lifting of water from rivers and streams through pump irrigation, and
6. The efficient utilization of ground water resources.
After 1988, the Government put forward continuous efforts in the construction of dams and reversion throughout the country by utilization large capital investment, manpower and machineries making use of the available domestic resources and expertise. As the result of these affords, many kinds of Irrigation facilities now exist in groups in localized zones throughout the country.

*Development of agriculture as the base and all-round development of other sectors of the economy as well
*Proper evolution of the market-oriented economic system
*Development of the economy inviting participation in terms of techanical know-how and investments from sources inside the country and abroad
*The initiative to shape the national economy must be kept in the hands of the State and the national peoples
 
Main Object
1. To achieve surplus in paddy production
2. To achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil
3. To step up the production of exportable pulses and industrial crops

Six Strategies for Obtaining Sufficient Water for Cultivation

(1) Works to be completed according to schedule
(2) Works to be cost efficient
(3) Works to be structurally strong and durable
(4) Works to strictly conform to specification
(5) Works to be orderly, neat and aesthetic
(6) Watershed areas to be restocked with shade trees at, (50000), (40000) and (20000) for large, medium and small scale dams, respectively

(3) The renovation of existing reservoirs for rasing storage capacity and efficient delivery of irrigation water.
(4) The diversion and storage of water from rivers and streams. during high water levels into adjscent ponds or depressions, for storage with sluice gates.
(5) The provision of water from rivers and streams, through pump-lift irrigation, and
(6) The efficient utilization of ground water resources.

Main Function of the Agency (ID)
1. To carry out hydrological and, geological investigations, and topographic surveys of works currently under implementation and other prospective major projects; and to draw designs, based on data and information collected.
2. To undertake planning and construction of new projects.
3. To perform operation and maintenance of the existing irrigation , drainage and flood provide works, and
4. To provide technological assistance to rural development and rural uplift of Border Areas and National.
