Climate Conditions of Myanmar
Myanmar is geographically located between 9˙32΄ and 28˙31΄ north latitude and 92˙10΄ and 92˙10΄ east longitude. It is characterized by mountain ranges in the north, east and west and a long coastal strip in the south. Lengthwise, it stretches about (2061)km north to south and approximates (945)km east to west while area wise is (67.65) million hectares. It has common international borders with China in the north, Thailand and Laos in the east, India and Bang in the west and again with Thailand in the south.
Myanmar has three distinct spells as the dry, wet and cold seasons. Three distinct spells as the dry, wet and cold seasons. The rainy season stretches from May to October and soons usher in the deltaic area, 2030 mm to 3810 mm in the north, about 1520 mm in the Shan state; rising to 5080 mm in the Rakhine and Tanintharyi regions, and dipping to less than 760 mm in the central dry zone. And incidentally such localities experience temperature of 40˙C to 43˙C during summer, while dropping to 10˙C to 16˙C during winters.
The occurrence of rainfall varies in intensity and time of year and is different between region. The diverse conditions call for provision for adequate storage of water, for irrigation on one hand, and so well dual protection from inundation on the other hand, so as to ensure crop-cultivation all year round. The problems require efficient water usage planning, and it will be necessary for the Irrigation Department to play an increasingly important role, in addressing the issues.
