Formerly, it was normal to engage in the construction of diversion systems as less capital intensive and also for their shorter maturing periods. The disadvantages, however, were their ability to be utilized only about 25% of the inflow of rivers and streams, while leading to non-usable losses of the major potential, in overflows. Latterly, storage reservoirs, have taken the place of many weirs and also been given priority in harnessing newly investigated prospective river and streams. Reservoirs established to date have been as follows:

The chart shows that the water storage capacity of the (66) tanks and reservoirs, existing prior to the assumption of responsibilities by the State Peace and Development Council (formerly State Law and Order Resoration Council), stood at only (2.34) km3. Subsequently (127) tanks and reservoirs, having a storage capacity of (10.88) km3 were further completed. Additionally (20) more reservoirs, with a potential of (5) km3 are also under construction and stated for completion in 2004-2005. At that juncture, total storage capacity will approximate (19) km3 amounting to 1.5% of Myanmar's total annual water resources which stand at (1080) km3.
